The trick with short hair is matching the clip to the amount of hair you're holding, not the length you wish you had.
Which size to pick
| Hair length | Clip size | Best style |
|---|---|---|
| Pixie to ear length | Mini clips (about 1 inch) | Small side sections, pinned-back fringe |
| Chin-length bob | Small (1.5 to 2 inches) | Half-up, side twist |
| Lob, just above shoulders | Small to medium (2 to 2.5 inches) | Half-up, low twist, mini bun |
These are typical ranges, not strict rules. Thick short hair may need a size up; fine hair a size down. More on materials and shapes in our types of hair clips guide.
4 styles that work on short hair
- Half-up: gather the top section from temple to temple, twist once, and clip it at the crown.
- Side sweep: twist a front section back above one ear and secure with a mini clip.
- Low twist: on lob-length hair, twist everything upward at the nape and clip with the teeth facing up.
- Two mini clips: split a half-up into two small twists for more hold than one large clip.

When short hair falls out
Short layers slip because the clip's teeth can't reach them. Add a little texture spray or dry shampoo before clipping, twist the section tightly, and push the teeth in against the direction of the twist. If pieces still fall, a pair of bobby pins under the clip helps. A claw clip that's too big will slide no matter what.
Skip a claw clip if
Your hair is shorter than your ear lobes all around, or you have a fresh cut with lots of short layers. Snap clips or bobby pins will hold better until it grows.

Frequently asked questions
Can you use a claw clip with short hair?
Yes, if your hair reaches at least your chin. Use a small clip and a half-up or side-twist style.
What size claw clip is best for a bob?
A small clip, around 1.5 to 2 inches, usually suits a chin-length bob. Size up slightly for thick hair.
Why won't my claw clip stay in short hair?
Usually the clip is too large or the hair is too smooth. Try a smaller clip, add texture spray and twist the section tighter.
